Tips To Wind Down And Fall Asleep

We sleep a fair bit. In fact a third of our lives is spent sleeping. When we’re awake, we move around which keeps our blood flowing and our joints moving but when we’re asleep, we need our mattress to provide all the support our bodies need. However getting to sleep at all can be difficult at times. Up to 90% of Australians experience some form of sleeping disorder and getting to sleep and staying asleep is one of the top listed problems.

Winding down

We need a time to wind down before falling asleep. And this is where your bedroom should be made into a place of comfort without the stresses of the outside world.

Stop using the iPad at night

For some, using an iPad or other device before going to sleep can stop us from nodding off. The blue lights emitted from the screen trick our brains into thinking it’s still daylight. Modern devices like the iPad have a night-time feature which filters out much of the blue light and this can certainly help. However the activity on the screen – all the little lights moving around – can still make us feel more awake then we’d like.

Get into a good old-fashioned book

Reading a good book before sleep helps distract and relax your mind from the stresses and worries of the day. Reading – particularly fiction – uses your imagination and that can help get your mind onto a level closer to your dreaming mind. Reading is proven to help us fall asleep – just like kids enjoy a story before bed.

Get your room right for sleeping

Your bedroom needs to be a place of comfort – clean, uncluttered and quiet. Black-out blinds are great addition for city dwellers. ‘White noise’ from a fan or sound machine can also help block out street noise.

Sleeping routine

Try to stick to the same bedtime and wake up time – even on the weekends. The body clock can easily get out of sequence. Staying systematic with set sleeping hours can help you fall asleep.
